Reading is Essential for a Healthy Brain

Several years ago while on a trip to three East African countries I visited a home in a major capital city. I noticed there were no books or newspapers present in the home. Being curious, I asked the younger members of the family what they read? The response was nothing. After graduating from eighth grade they never read anything. Such a situation left sadness in my heart. Not reading stagnates our lives. It is not healthy, especially for our brain. Carl Sagan once quoted – “The brain is like a muscle. When it is in use, we feel good.” Reading should be part of our daily lives, whether we are 8, 18 or 80. Reading helps us think. It provides topics for stimulating conversation. It helps us dream.
